Happy Gas Sedation Post-Operative Instructions

Home 9 Happy Gas Sedation Post-Operative Instructions

The following instructions generally apply prior to and following inhalational (happy gas) sedation. Your treating practitioner will advise you if you are required to follow the instructions below in association with your sedation procedure. Please note that for post operative instructions following IV sedation, please discuss with your treating sedation specialist.

Before the appointment:

  • Eat a light meal before the procedure (fasting not required)
  • Drink fluids as usual to stay hydrated.
  • Do not use alcohol or illicit drugs within 24hrs of the procedure
  • Take your usual medications at the usual times unless advised by your practitioner
  • Let your clinician know if you are feeling unwell on the day of the procedure as this may affect your treatment

After the appointment:

  • You will be given oxygen for a few minutes after the procedure to help ‘flush’ out the happy gas
  • You will be observed for a short period of time after the procedure as you return to normal function
  • The effects of happy gas resolve very quickly and if you are feeling well enough, should be able to drive home 30minutes after the procedure concludes.
